RAKU-GAKI.COM

COVER FOR CBCNET

Q:Could you tell me you brief background and why you started doing web design.
Koji Nishida: When I was a student, I was doing glass craft but I had an accident which made my right hand disabled. So, I started useing computer. This happen when I was 20 years old.

Q:
What do you do now? Could you tell me your recent projects?
KN: I do freelance, mainly in web design. I do RAKU-GAKI.COM and collaboration, client work as well. Here are few of my recent work.

"Monochrome Circus"
http://www.nhk.or.jp/dig/monomania/
This is a collaboration with NHK Osaka [dig] team(http://www.nhk.or.jp/dig/)
It's a web for a dance company which got together in Kyoto and goes world wide.

"COVER"
http://www.sss.to/cover/
This is a collaboration with shinzi from kitk(http://www.kitk.org/)、sss(http://www.sss.to/) and
maki from *designbodega(http://www.designbodega.net/).
Everyones just pastieing graphics just as they fill like.

"Naphthalene"
http://www.naph.tv/
A designer unit with Kouichi Kaneda. We do some work together now and then.

Q:
At RAKU-GAKI.COM you could see how you use the space unique and the originality you have. What's the concept in the website? Any stories to tell?
KN: RAKU-GAKI.COM was made not like you flip the pages. It's for you to experience. The pillar that moves in the back is a statue, and to look at it in different angle I thought there will be a varios atmosphere to it. When you look at a statue, in reality, it gives a different impression when you look at a different angle because of the light and the effect of the surroundings. So I try to do that in RAKU-GAKI.COM.
I try to make a space that makes me feel that I want to go there. Making a world inside of RAKU-GAKI.COM and I want to go there. I think that makes me to be aware of the space. And also I try to show the graphic within the space so that it will be more than a graphic to look at, to be a graphic that 'exists'.

Q:
Any designer that you respect and got influenced by?
KN: A motion director called Shuichi Tan gave me a big influence. I saw his work when I was in highschool and I still look foward to his next one. I don't know how to say it, it's moving but it's really calm. It moves but that makes it more statical. I was fascinated by that.

Q:
Where do you get your inspiration and what's important to you in everyday life?
KN: Recently, I feel alot of thing when I'm just looking outside. I think I get inspired by the changing of the situation, meaning like when the wind blows and light comes in.
The important thing to me is, simply communicating with people. I try to talk straingt than going around.

Q:
The web scene has became massive. There's alway people who does their own way and people who don't.
What do you think of the situation going around now?
KN: Yeah, there is look alike design more. But I think it's the process of making things. I believe that no one could be happy if they are ripping somebody off. I think during that process I hope they realize in there own style. But still I am looking for that too.
Else that, I want the web scene to be more open and wide. Meaning more people from different fields would come in and create together. I feel today, that it's just going around the same people, little closed. Getting involved industries like game, animation, music, and art. I hope I could widen like that.

Q:What's ' Creativity' to you?
KN: I think to make something that you never experienced before. I think that people create to experience that.
But you could never make something that you never experienced so , I make and make and make...something like that, I guess.

Q:
Any last words?
KN: One step everyday. Thankyou very much.
