針金建二郎率いるADAPTERは、TOKYO発信のグラフィックアートのニュージェネレーションとして、おそらく今最も注目されている存在であろう。デジタルコラージュを得意とするそのアートワークは、ハイファッションにも通じるエッジの効いた表現であるにも関わらず、不思議と繊細で美しく、馴染みやすい。
そのADAPTERは、今から遡ること僅か3年、2003年に突如として登場し、主に最先端のストリートファッションで賑わう街（渋谷・原宿）に集う若者の強い支持を得て、まもなく東京のグラフィックアートシーンの重要な一側面を担うに至った。同集団がプロデュースしたEXHIBITIONイベント「NWBA」(NO WALL BETWEEN THE ART)、及びフリー・グラフィック・マガジン「Public/Image.」の発行が、それまで殆ど日の目を浴びることのなかった東京のアンダーグラウンドなクリエイティヴシーンを、世に知らしめた功績は大きい。
思えば、針谷が掲げた「No WALL …」というシュプレヒ･コールは、グラフィック・アートやファッション・デザインといった他のクリエイティヴジャンルとの連携を拒絶し、少数の美術コレクターや一握りのオークション・フィクサーによるプライス・コントロールによって、ようやく不透明ながらもビジネスとして成立する日本のコンテンポラリー･アート・シーンに対するチャレンジであるようにも思え、一方で消費というドグマの中で成立するコマーシャル･ワークへの微かな抵抗の表明にも思える。
昨年末、パリ、Surface To Airでの個展「More Than Human」から帰国したばかりの針谷は、OPEN
して間もないNANZUKA UNDERGROUNDからの個展オファーを、「日本でのアートワークの発表は今のところ考えていない」と半ば諦め気味に断った。しかし、その後、彼に心変わりをさせたものは、おそらく、それでもクリエイティヴを続ける多くの同世代の表現者たちと、それに理解を示す僅かな先輩たち、そして何よりも「諦めてはならない」と、己の原点に立ち返ろうとする針谷自身の心の叫びが、そこに居たからだろう。
「眩暈（めまい）」と題された今回のADAPTERの個展について、針谷は、「特有の計算とサービスを必要とするコマーシャル・ワークとは違い、純粋に己の表現欲求に従ったより感覚的な創作活動の結果」と語る。果たして、その作品はいかなる美を物語るのか。異端児ADAPETRの現在を、しかと見届けたい。

ADAPTER lead by Kenjiro Harigai is probably the most notable existence as a new generation in Tokyo graphic art scene. Even open to high fashion, their artwork specialized in digital collage is edgily represented, but mysteriously enough, it is delicate, beautiful and also adaptable.
ADAPTER suddenly appeared in 2003, dating back to only 3 years ago from today, having gained a great reputation especially from young people gathering in towns like Shibuya or Harajuku crowded with latest street fashion, then becoming a torchbearer of an important aspect in Tokyo graphic art scene. Producing an exhibition event “NWBA” (NO WALL BETWEEN ART) and publishing free graphic magazine “Public Image” have taken an important role in letting the public know about Tokyo’s creative scene in underground which was hardly ever realized until then.
Harigai’s sprech-call of “NWBA” can be considered on one hand as a challenge to Japanese contemporary art scene, which denies cooperation with other creative genres such as graphic art and fashion design and is barely established as a business on the ground of the price control by a few art collectors and a handful of auction fixer, and on the other hand as a manifestation of resistance to commercial work established in a dogma of consumption.
At the end of the last year, Harigai, who just came back to Japan from the exhibition of “More Than Human”(Surface To Air .Paris) rejected an offer from NANZUKA UNDERGROUND, saying with a half resignation “I am not thinking about showing my artworks here in Japan for this moment.” However, what changed his mind later on were probably other artists of his same generation who never give up on their creations in Japan and a few elders who show their understanding, and what is more was probably Harigai’s soul itself trying to return to his origin, crying out “don’t give up.”
Regarding the solo exhibition by ADAPTER titled “Memai(dizziness)” Harigai remarks that “it is a result of a rather sensuous creative activity followed by own pure desire of representation.” What kind of beauty are the artworks going to tell to us? Let’s see with our own eyes the now of the eccentric ADAPTER.

【ADAPTER　プロフィール】
2003年、針谷建二郎により設立されたアートワーク集団。エッジの効いたグラフィックアートを基本に、時代の空気を反映させたアートディレクション、デザイン、企画を展開。2003年より複合アートイベント「NWBA」の企画運営、2005年よりビジュアルフリーマガジン「PUBLICIMAGE．」を発行。2004年3月、 BEAMS-TとROCKETにて個展を同時開催。2005年１０月、パリ、Surface To Airにて個展「More Than Human」開催。
